Chris Rock’s joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair at the Oscars has brought attention to the hair loss condition known as alopecia.

Alopecia is a medical term for hair loss, which can include everything from common balding on the head to hair loss on the body and more, according to the Mayo Clinic. There are multiple kinds of alopecia, including alopecia areata, a disease in which the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing hair loss.
