Join Post reporters as the House of Representatives votes on whether to make Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) its next speaker. The position has remained vacant since Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted from the post. Jordan, the Judiciary Committee chairman, has mounted an aggressive pressure campaign to gain the support of more than 50 Republican holdouts skeptical of his ability to lead. Jordan can only afford to lose four votes on the floor.

The next speaker will face the immediate and daunting task of averting a government shutdown. That will require achieving something that McCarthy couldn’t: reaching a funding deal that the Republican House and Democratic Senate will pass, and that President Biden will sign, without losing the gavel.
