Washington has stepped up its criticism of the way Israel is carrying out its military retaliation in Gaza.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinker said there is a “gap” between Israel’s promises to protect civilians and what is happening “on the ground” in Gaza.

Israel maintains it is taking steps to minimise civilian harm.
