Simone Biles’s withdrawal from the Tokyo Olympics paved the way for gymnast Suni Lee’s chance at gold. On July 29, the Minnesota native dominated the all-around competition. Team USA has won every all-around title at the Olympics since 2004 and even after Biles withdrew from the competition earlier this week for mental health reasons, uneven bars specialist Lee was able to perform well in all of the events and win. Lee joins Carly Patterson, Nastia Liukin, Gabby Douglas and Biles as all-around Olympic gold medalists. Washington Post sports reporter Liz Clarke explains Lee’s historic milestone.
(Editor’s note: This video says Russian gymnast Angelina Melnikova took to the floor following Sunisa Lee. It was Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade. We regret the error.) Read more: https://wapo.st/3iUhjRC. Subscribe to The Washington Post on YouTube: https://wapo.st/2QOdcqK
