The United Nations has warned that the conflict in Sudan risks “a catastrophic conflagration that could engulf the whole region and beyond”.
The warning was made by United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, speaking to the the UN Security Council in New York.
He urged UN members to use their influence to stop the violence and restore the east African country to its democratic path.
Fighting has broken out in the capital, Khartoum, and other parts of the country in a power struggle within the country’s military leadership. The clashes are between the regular army and a paramilitary force called the Rapid Support Forces.
Many countries are trying to withdraw their citizens from Sudan.
