After more than a month of strict lockdown in the Chinese city of Shanghai, authorities have begun gradually easing Covid restrictions.

The number of new cases is falling, but thousands of people remain in government-run quarantine facilities.

Shanghai’s leaders believe the outbreak has been contained. A mass clean-up operation is under way, with an army of workers disinfecting the city’s streets.

Enforcement of Covid restrictions in China has been harsh at times, with some communities fenced off and barricaded inside their homes to reduce the spread of the virus.
