The US and UK have threatened Russia with immediate sanctions after the country sent troops into eastern Ukraine.

It followed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement that Russia recognises two rebel-held regions in eastern Ukraine, Donetsk and Luhansk, as independent states.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he would unveil a “first barrage” of economic sanctions against Russia later today.

Mr Johnson said there was “a lot more we are going to do” if a full-scale invasion of the country takes place.

Meanwhile, the European Union is also considering sanctions against Russia.
