Join live coverage with Libby Casey as the House of Representatives attempts to elect its next speaker. Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), the House majority whip, was elected as the GOP speaker nominee on a fifth ballot in an internal race, beating out eight other candidates.

Emmer is the third Republican speaker nominee since Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was ousted. To win the gavel, Emmer will need a majority of the full chamber. The next speaker has less than a month to pass a funding deal and avert a government shutdown.
