Two National Guard members were shot near the White House in Washington, DC, on Nov. 26, officials said. A suspect is in custody.
West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey said the condition of the guardsmen was unclear. Both victims were members of the West Virginia National Guard.
“We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information,” Morrisey said in a statement. “Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community.” The governor had earlier reported that both had died.
The White House was locked down after the shooting. President Donald Trump is at his residence in Palm Beach, Florida, for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The shooting comes as thousands of troops have been deployed for months across Washington, DC, as part of Trump’s efforts to combat crime in the nation’s capital.
