Congress is wading into foreign affairs Tuesday, holding hearings on China’s role as a national security and economic threat, as well as examining how the Biden administration is spending money in Ukraine’s war with Russia, itself a major U.S. antagonist.

Following the one-year mark of the war in Ukraine, committee members on the Senate Armed Services Committee and the House Appropriations Committee will examine oversight of Ukraine military aid and hear from Defense Department officials. The hearing comes a day after the release of a report that the Pentagon contributed to the sudden collapse of the Afghan security forces in August 2021 partly due to poor planning and lack of accountability.

On China, the House Foreign Affairs Committee and House Committee on Science, Space and Technology will explore how China is becoming a growing national security threat and the increased competition with China on technological innovations. The hearings follow the shooting down of a Chinese spy balloon that flew over U.S. missile and nuclear weapons sites.
