An investigation by The Intercept has revealed that former national security adviser and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger bears responsibility for more violence and civilian deaths in Cambodia than previously known. The U.S. carpet bombing of Cambodia between 1969 and 1973 has been well-documented, but the newly uncovered evidence points to previously unreported attacks that resulted in the deaths or injuries of hundreds of Cambodian civilians during Kissinger’s tenure. The investigation relies on a collection of formerly classified U.S. military documents, inspector generals’ inquiries, and other materials from the U.S. National Archives. Survivors from 13 Cambodian villages along the Vietnamese border recounted attacks that killed hundreds of their relatives and neighbors during Kissinger’s time in the White House. These attacks involved not only bombings but also helicopter gunships strafing, burning, and looting villages. The uncovered incidents and survivor testimonies increase the number of deaths for which Kissinger is held responsible and raise the possibility of renewed efforts to hold him accountable for war crimes. The evidence also sheds light on the impunity enjoyed by U.S. soldiers implicated in the killing and maiming of civilians, as they received little to no punishment. When confronted about these deaths, Kissinger responded sarcastically and refused to provide answers. The investigation serves to reveal the long-term trauma endured by survivors of the American war and brings attention to a largely unknown chapter in the history of U.S. military actions in Cambodia.
