Climate fortresses

On the show, Chris Hedges discusses the building of climate fortresses with the author and journalist, Todd Miller.

Industrialized nations, among them the world’s largest polluters, are compounding one human-made crisis with another one. Rather than invest in technologies to end our dependence on fossil fuels they are investing billions to construct climate fortresses ringed by border walls. There are already more than 63 border walls, manned by tens of thousands of border guards. These nations, including the United States, are investing in technologies and equipment including robots, drones, surveillance cameras, iris recognition software, weapons, acoustic detection devices, and ready-to-eat meals to blockade and criminalize those fleeing war and the worsening climate emergency that is triggering famines, droughts, wildfires and declining crop yields. More than 44,000 people (a vast undercount, according to researchers of the International Organization on Migration) have died crossing borders from 2014 to 2020, in both the world’s deserts or seas. And tens of thousands of others are incarcerated in a global network of more than 2,000 detention centers, while companies in the border industry anticipate more profitable contracts with the intensifying climate crisis. For four decades, with virtually no public debate, a handful of large corporations such as Northrop Grumman, Elbit Systems, General Atomics and Deloitte have driven up immigration enforcement budgets in the United States behind closed doors and beyond public scrutiny.

Todd Miller’s new book is Build Bridges Not Walls: A Journey to a World Without Borders.

Robert Frost's "The Mending Wall" is worth remembering in the context of this discussion: Mending Wall
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it,
    And spills the upper boulders in the sun;
And makes gaps even two can pass abreast.
The work of hunters is another thing:
I have come after them and made repair
Where they have left not one stone on a stone,
But they would have the rabbit out of hiding,
To please the yelping dogs. The gaps I mean,
No one has seen them made or heard them made,
But at spring mending-time we find them there.
    I let my neighbor know beyond the hill;
And on a day we meet to walk the line
And set the wall between us once again.
We keep the wall between us as we go.
To each the boulders that have fallen to each.
And some are loaves and some so nearly balls
We have to use a spell to make them balance:
‘Stay where you are until our backs are turned!’
We wear our fingers rough with handling them.
Oh, just another kind of out-door game,
One on a side. It comes to little more:
There where it is we do not need the wall:
He is all pine and I am apple orchard.
My apple trees will never get across
And eat the cones under his pines, I tell him.
He only says, ‘Good fences make good neighbors.’
Spring is the mischief in me, and I wonder
If I could put a notion in his head:
‘Why do they make good neighbors? Isn't it
Where there are cows? But here there are no cows.
Before I built a wall I'd ask to know
What I was walling in or walling out,
And to whom I was like to give offense.
Something there is that doesn't love a wall,
That wants it down.’ I could say ‘Elves’ to him,
But it's not elves exactly, and I'd rather
He said it for himself. I see him there
Bringing a stone grasped firmly by the top
In each hand, like an old-stone savage armed.
He moves in darkness as it seems to me,
Not of woods only and the shade of trees.
He will not go behind his father's saying,
And he likes having thought of it so well
He says again, ‘Good fences make good neighbors.’

What do elections in America even mean when important issues like these are suppressed from the Public Consciousness, and never even enter the debate in political campaigns ??? The self evident answer to that question will tell you why I don't even bother to vote.

  • Pat Branigan

The more you hear of our government and our laws the more you realize this is an anti-Christian nation. The story actually allegory of the Anti-Christ was not about some creature or the devil it was about the systems that humans make up to rationalize their anti-Christ behaviors in the pursuit of wealth.

They, the immigrants think that if they get the West. In their fevored imagination fueled by Hollywood's dream factory. That everything will be ok, that there they will reached their dreams or things will be better. Only to find Western countries in the midst of deep wide spectrum crisis as in plural crisis. Many political, social and economic problems the political class has no solution too. Risking their lives for a mirage.

America removes its border. How does this make housing more affordable? The value of land and property would sky-rocket. The value of labour would be reduced radically. The welfare 'state' would cease to exist. What you would create is a dystopian globalist hell-hole. I'm beginning to suspect your true motives.

If the corrupt don't change their path they are the one's that will suffer most in the future, what goe's around, come's around. Karma is a bitch. The longer they continue their evil the worse they will fall.

  • Zehra Jafri

The RepubliCons are part and parcel of the evil powers in control, they commit huge anti human activities in secret and their secrets were kept by the establishment they set up while the Democrats are forced to join the killing, corruption machine by force and maligned as much as possible before the world,to keep them weak. Those that stand strong like JFK, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr, Qaddafi etc get scrapped.

  • Zehra Jafri

The plot doesn't change because the Presidents are puppets of the deep state and, war profiteering, baby killing corporations and military industrial congressional complex. The anti human plot continues in every Presidency.

The last I heard lately was the flow of immigration from the first world towards Mexico and other Middle American countries; they are safe places.
A country without borders is no country
    any more.
Mass immigration and colonisation of other people’s homelands
is devastating for the indigenous people.

Build bridges not walls……we are city builders….great books. Nothing will happen until you see that capitalism is the root of all evil and until you get rid of the decaying, dehumanization, and diseased system of capitalism we in the West will continue to allow a few corporation tyrants to rein terror and cause immeasurable pain and suffering around the world. What a shameful history.

Such a bummer that Chris won't run for Potus. As a Canadian, I'd feel a hell of a lot happier. Borders …a game of Risk 4 greedos.

I truly believe America will be divided into different countries. The dream has been stolen and authoritarian laws being imposed and the constitution laws has been broken and mistranslated or infringed
