The “Victory Day” parade on Wednesday will see Kim rub shoulders with China’s President Xi Jinping, Russia’s Vladimir Putin and other world leaders – making it his first multilateral international meeting. Kim crossed into China on Tuesday onboard his armoured train, which is said to include a restaurant serving fine French wines and dishes like fresh lobster. Kim’s attendance marks the first time a North Korean leader has attended a Chinese military parade since 1959. He will be among 26 other heads of state – including leaders from Myanmar, Iran and Cuba.

China’s Sept. 3 military parade, held to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the War of Resistance Against Japan, will be the fourth such event since President Xi Jinping came to power. Yet the context today is strikingly different. At home, the country faces economic headwinds, but its military strength continues to grow. Abroad, ties with the West—particularly the United States—are increasingly tense, while the postwar international order is being reshaped under the pressure of the Russia-Ukraine war.
