The New York Times’ office was hit with vandalism yesterday, after it published a clarification on a photo widely used by media, including by 10 News+, showing the heartbreaking reality of the starvation crisis in Gaza.
The correction, posted to an auxiliary NYT PR account on X, stated that they ran the photo of 18-month-old Mohammed who was suffering from severe malnutrition. The post then clarifies that “we have since learned new information,” and “have updated our story to add context about his pre-existing health problems.”
Mohammad, as 10 News+ has previously reported, suffers from cerebral palsy. While it is true this does constitute a pre-existing health condition, the Times’ clarification makes no effort to stress that in a starvation crisis, which remains verified by the World Health Organisation, it is the most vulnerable who suffer first, and most. And that children like Mohammad, who suffer from pre-existing conditions, feel the effects of malnutrition harder than the general population.
10 News+ offers this clarification, on the New York Times’ correction.
