Thirty-one people have died from alcohol poisoning in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

More than 40 others are being treated in hospital, many of them are said to be in critical condition.

Police have made five arrests. Gujarat has a near total ban on alcohol, but illegal production thrives.

According to government sources, the liquor drank by the victims was being sold illegally in the region.
