Speaking in Iowa, President Joe Biden referred to the Russian invasion of Ukraine as “genocide” for the first time.

President Joe Biden made a point of calling Russia’s actions in Ukraine a “genocide” on the same day his counterpart Vladimir Putin said peace talks have reached a “dead end” and the war will continue until Moscow’s goals are accomplished.

Before heading back to the White House from Iowa, Biden told reporters Tuesday that he intentionally said “genocide” when describing Russia’s atrocities against Ukraine, something he had previously avoided. “It’s become clearer and clearer that Putin is trying to wipe out the idea of being Ukrainian,” Biden said.
